Fresh-air cooling with integral economizers
When a building soaks up heat from cooking equipment, lighting and the people inside, the warmth may continue to heat the building even when the outside temperature is cool and comfortable.
At these times, it’s more economical to shut off the compressors and cool using outdoor air. That’s how economizers work, "economizing" on cooling costs by using cooler, outdoor air to cool without the compressors.
Measuring temperature and humidity
In areas with high humidity, choose an economizer with enthalpy (or "total heat") control to measure outdoor air moisture. Enthalpy control monitors both sensible heat (temperature) and latent heat (humidity) in the air, allowing outside air to be used for cooling only if it is cool and dry enough to keep occupants comfortable. The economizer will then use the outside air for cooling rather than operating the compressors.
